Character History:
Once upon a time in the magical land of Japan, there was a project that the law enforcement was working on in secret: To build a robotic police force that could assist officers in arresting criminals and bringing them to justice. It was a pioneering event in the field of both criminal justice and robotics. Their first prototype ever, Deckerd, was kept below ground in an old abandoned field. Your typical every day in Japan, it seems! That is until a boy stepped on a grate that led to the facility where they were making the robot, falling into the same room where they were housing it. The robot kicked to life, stated it’s name, and the two were introduced.

The boy, who went by the name of Yuuta, taught Deckerd many things as he continued to visit. Things like feelings, friendship, laughter. Things that couldn’t be downloaded. Deckerd truly believed that this boy had made him feel almost...alive. But when the time came, when Deckerd was finally complete, they decided to wipe his memory so he could begin anew as the police car who became a robot. This made Yuuta sad. But! Just when the city needed it most, Deckerd became conscious, and retained his feelings that Yuuta had given him. Turns out, Yuuta didn’t give him just information...but a heart.

Yep. Robots with hearts. It was dubbed Super A.I. Artificial intelligence with the power of a human heart.

After this, the police force saw that Yuuta would become a chief of the Brave Police, since it is because of him that Deckerd could perform so well as a cop. More robots were built to join the team, and they eventually became the Brave Police. Some were made right away, like the Build Team, and others were add ons, like Gunmax as the motorcycle detective or Shadowmaru as the ninja detective and stealth operatist. Everything was going great.

That is until someone by the name of Victim wanted to show the true evil of Super A.I. He took it from a submarine that had once been Kagerou, a ninja much like Shadowmaru at some point, and used it to create the Chieftains, robots who were fueled only by pure evil, with all the goodness sucked out of their ‘hearts’. Their A.I. When the Chieftains went after Deckerd and the rest of the Brave Police, they quickly decimated their forces, and even killed Deckerd in the process. It was then that Duke arrived with Regina, from Europe, to assist the Brave Police in the Chieftain threat. He was from the Scotland Yard, which was England’s version of the Brave Police. Duke was able to ward off the Chieftain using his sword, but it still left Deckerd to die.

With Deckerd gone, the team was in shambles, and were having a hard time adjusting to this new guy on the squad. Duke was a robot who had (by Regina’s best efforts) all the evil taken out of his heart, and void of any emotion that would be deemed evil, like rage, jealousy, or sorrow. They would lead to a robot much like Chieftain, in Regina’s eyes. So while Duke at first came off a bit cold, almost heartless, he started to see that the Build Team, Gunmax, and Shadowmaru were different than him. It was then that he actually started to question if having those feelings were good...or bad.

He didn’t have long to think on it, though. The Brave Police were charged with guarding a freight train that contained Deckerd’s backup parts. Chieftain showed up once more, this time with Deckerd’s old body in tow, and under their command via a mystical sword that can control robots. Pretty freaky, huh. So they’re fighting to hold these robots back so that they can save Deckerd, and the Chieftain uses an immobilization ray thing on them, causing them to be unable to transform into their super forms, Super Build Tiger and Duke Fire. The Super forms are basically just upscale versions of them, the Build Team all combining into one and Duke using a firetruck to form Duke Fire.

Duke fell back, because there was nothing he could do if he couldn’t transform. Then he saw the Build Team use their love, their anger that Chieftain had taken Deckerd away, to transform despite the immobilization. It was then that Duke knew that love was something he had. That he couldn’t be better than someone who could overcome that kind of power. And if having those evil things in his heart was the way to do it, then he would. So against Regina’s wishes, Yuuta calls for Duke Fire, and he transforms, just in time to save both Regina and Yuuta from being destroyed. After transforming, he attacks Chieftain, who escapes with the sword and flies off. Deckerd’s old body falls over, and is back in the hands of the police.

When they return Deckerd’s Super A.I. to his body, he awakens, to everyone’s relief. Duke seemed relieved as well that the one who gave him a heart was now with him again. The only problem? Deckerd seemed to lose all his memories of Yuuta and the Brave Police. But it’s okay! After a whole episode of gut-wrenching emotion killing, Deckerd sees a picture that Yuuta drew of him and Deckerd, and his memory returns! We won’t dwell on it for too long because this is the part where RC pretty much gave up on life.

Now that Deckerd is back, Duke is now an official part of the Brave Police, working alongside Deckerd as one of his partners. However, Chieftain is still an issue. So the Police devised a way for Deckerd and Duke to combine their powers to form the ULTIMATE fighting robot. Fire J-Decker. However, there was one drawback. When doing this, one of them would lose their Super A.I. This obviously wasn’t taken well with either party. They constantly looked for ways around it, seeing as they felt two robots were better than one. But when the Chieftains came back, this time combining as well, using the weaker of the two as the spare parts, it proved to be too much for Duke Fire and J-Decker alone. The two decided to combine, despite Regina’s pleas not to (oh yeah she apparently started caring about feelings now. Go figure.) Yuuta believed in them and let them combine, but before they did, they made a promise to each other that the other would watch over their respective human.

So they combined and...in a 1 in 50,000 chance, they both stayed alive! So now they can Fire J-Decker whenever they want because they’re not dead! But this still left Chieftain. With Duke’s Fire Sword and Deckerd’s firepower, they took the Chieftain down using Gunmax’s Max Cannon to become FIRE J-DECKER MAX CANNON MODE!!!! BUT THAT SWORD. THE ONE THAT RUINS EVERYONE’S LIVES tried to kill Fire J-Decker after Chieftain fell. Unfortunately, Chieftain wasn’t having any of that, and stabbed his hand through the sword’s eye. It killed the creature, and thus, freed itself as well. With the Chieftain threat finally gone (with the exception of Victim, who had escaped everything), the Brave Police returned home, and Duke was finally a member that was well recieved and welcome.

After this, he began doing missions for the Brave Police, sometimes following Shadowmaru on adventures that involved smuggling. He was trailing behind a truck with the ninja, on the trail of some illegal wrongdoings, when he was confronted by...flying schoolgirls. Yep. You heard right. They had seemed to knock Shadowmaru offline, making him have the appearance of a puppet without strings to hold him up. And just before it’s about to happen to him...

He gets pulled to Nautilus.

Character Personality:
Take your typical knight in shining armor from your favourite storybook. Replace whatever name that knight had, and you’d get the core personality of Duke. He’s dignified, loyal, and righteous when it comes down to it, and will always do the honorable thing. He’s practically glued to the concept of chivalry. It goes without saying that bravery is one of his strongest qualities. He’s not afraid of taking down a foe, even if it might cost him his life. As long as he can protect, that’s enough for him.

This could probably be filed under his knight/chivalry note, but it’s shown that Duke is quite the environmentalist. He values all living things, even plants and animals, and thinks they are all important in some way or another to the Earth. In a way, he sees himself in this way too. If humans are willing to accept them to protect their planet, that includes it’s wildlife, and ecosystem. After all, a knight has to protect all living creatures, or so he’s been taught. He’ll even go so far as to preach about it to the other bots. He won’t know it in Wake, but he’ll be strangely protective over the sea life, especially. He really likes whales.

One of Duke’s downfalls is, he’s often elitist, and usually believes that his line of thinking is often the best. It’s more seen in the first few episodes that he’s in, but he’ll rarely listen to anyone who doesn’t share his line of thinking. To him, it’s usually the best, and he gets along better with people who agree with him in that regard. Afterwards, from the canon point I’m taking him from, he’s a little more open to other people’s ideas, although he still thinks he’s usually in the right when he has an idea.

But this doesn’t mean Duke doesn’t care about other people. He’ll gladly sacrifice himself for anything and everything to help his friends. In one of the episodes, Deckerd and Duke have to combine, knowing that if they did, one of them would be destroyed. Duke willingly gives himself to Deckerd for this, and Deckerd does in return. He’s always been one to protect his friends, and worries about their safety. Not that he doesn’t trust their abilities, but it’s just something friends do. And when you’re the new kid in town, friends mean the world to you.

It’s a rare thing to see Duke express happiness. He’s usually content, but a smile is something that doesn’t cross his face very often. Probably because of how seriously he takes things. He’s not one to joke around often, and his sense of humor meter is dangerously low. Captain No-Fun here. But when he does, it’s usually small, and something that’s rather fleeting. Overall, it’s not that he’s not HAPPY, just that it’s rare to see him showing the usual signs of happiness. He’ll keep his smiles and sunshine down in his wiring, thank you.

Duke has his sad moments too. But like with happiness, he’ll hide it under a mask of duty and indifference. In reality, he suffers feelings of insecurity, that he won’t be able to do his duty, that he’s not fitting in with others, and that his own personality might not mesh with everyone. Of course, he wouldn’t speak of this. Not to just anyone. His biggest fear is letting his team down, both the Brave Police, and the Scotland Yard in England.

Powers and Abilities:
The most obvious ability that Duke possesses is his ability to transform into an automobile. And what does he transform into, exactly? An ambulance. Don’t confuse him for a medic, though. He only wears the uniform. His transformation is similar to that of a...Transformer! He can do many things in this form like...drive! And use sirens! Yeah, anything typical an ambulance can do, he can do.

Duke’s also skilled in the art of swordsmanship. Being a knight, he has one at his side and will use it should the situation call for it. He fights mainly in the way a medieval knight would brandish a sword (he’s no fencer). He’s no pushover, to say the least.

If the Duke Fire command is called (I don’t believe anyone in Nautilus has this so this is just for reference) Duke will combine with a firetruck that follows him in his world (he won’t arrive with this in Nautilus) to form Duke Fire. It’s basically a larger robot; Duke with more armor plating and a sword the brandishes fire. He can fly in this form and is pretty powerful.

If we want to get REALLY HARDCORE, Duke can also combine with Deckerd’s super form, J-Decker, to make Fire J-Decker. Basically take what Duke does to form Duke Fire, and apply it to J-Decker, only in this case, he’s the fire true. The extra armor and plating. He and Deckerd are one in this form, but can both speak and think individually. Again, this requires a command. And the proper people needed. Also, he’s able to use the Max Cannon (Gunmax’s form) and shoot things. But Gunmax needs to be actually present (and willing) for this.

Network:
[The network feed clicks on to show--oh, it’s this guy. The self-proclaimed knight of Nautilus. And boy, does he look slightly peeved. Those green eyes stare directly into the communicator, holding a finger up and--oh, here comes a speech.]

I would like to know who thought it would be a wise idea to destroy some of the trees in the Southern District. From what I’ve gathered, wildlife is rather rare in a city. We should preserve it, no matter what kind of life form it is. I’ve cleaned up the broken branches, but if you are the perpetrator, I’d like you to speak up.

[His head tilts to the side, gaze averted for only a slight moment.]

I don’t intend to punish. I just want to know the reason why. So I can plant new ones.

Thank you.

Third Person:

Perfect.

It was such a simple word, but it meant...so much. Being perfect was everything. The perfect policeman would save lives. The perfect policeman would do the right thing. The perfect policeman would never give into hate, greed, jealousy... Perfect seemed like a word that everyone aspired to be, and yet few ever achieved. And it was a word that Regina had often described him as. In essence, he should be honoured, to be called perfect by the most important person in his life.

If he truly felt that way. He shifted on his wheels, edging out of his recharge area slightly. Sleep wasn’t going to come easily, it seemed.

Seeing the Brave Police had called those thoughts into question. They were so different from him. They had evil thoughts...or that was what Regina had said. Evil... But when he looked at them, he didn’t see evil. He saw the love that they had for their former leader. Deckerd...the one who’d given them all ‘life’. Who’d given HIM life. Was love an evil emotion as well? He was too new to the concept, and it’d occupied so much of his few moments of downtime.
Was this what made Deckerd different from the rest?

No, no that wasn’t it. It was what made HIM different. He...he didn’t have these feelings. Regina had told him that they were evil, and that he shouldn’t give in. He had to make her proud. To keep her safe so he could see her smile...even just once. That wasn’t evil, was it? It was...

Love.

Yes, that was the word. The same feeling that the Build Team, Shadowmaru, and Gunmax had all felt for Deckered, he had for his Lady. But with love came rage, and sorrow. It came with all the feelings that Regina had said would cause him to be---

“Flawed.”

His voice was soft, almost a whisper, as he said it. But...for some reason, when that word came out of his proverbial mouth, it didn’t seem so bad. Humans were flawed, weren’t they? And if humans were able to create beings like Deckerd, who created all of them...who created HIM...

Maybe being flawed wasn’t so bad.
